Apparently you can text 999. Check out the website http://www.emergencysms.org.uk/how_to_send_text.php
This is great for walkers who are often out in the wilds with dodgy mobile signals. This is obviously also good for geocachers who will often disappear into the wilderness to grab some plastic hidden in a tree stump 2 miles from a road and often with less preparation than seasoned Ramblers!
BUT, you need to register your mobile first. Just text register to 999.
This is not the ideal way to summon the emergency services but if your voice signal is too bad to make a phone call you may be able to get a text off
And finally: Do not assume that your message has been received until you get a message back from the emergency service, an SMS ‘Delivery Report’ does not mean your message has been received.
